The Hon. Navdeep Singh Bains, P.C., M.P.
POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY
Navdeep Singh Bains is the federal Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Brampton South in Ontario. First elected federally in June 2004, he was subsequently re-elected in January 2006 and October 2008. In October 2005, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister under the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin and sworn in as a Member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada.
Since 2006, Mr. Bains has been appointed the Official Opposition Critic for Public Works and Government Services, Treasury Board, International Trade and Natural Resources, respectively. He also sat on the Caucus Committees for Planning and Priorities, Canada and the World and Economic Prosperity. In January 2007, Mr. Bains was appointed to the National Election Readiness Committee as a Caucus Representative and in March 2007 served as the Youth Liaison to the Young Liberals of Canada.
In January 2009, Mr Bains was appointed Co-Chair of the Special Committee on Party Renewal and tasked with leading a comprehensive process to consult with the membership and create a stronger Liberal Party. In March 2009, Mr. Bains was appointed Chair of Platform Development and given responsibility for managing the creation of the party’s next election platform.
In the past, Mr. Bains has sat on the following House of Commons’ Committees: Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics; Finance; Government Operations and Estimates; International Trade; Public Works and the Foreign Affairs and Subcommittee on Human Rights and International Development where he served as Chairman. As of January of 2009, Mr. Bains sits as a Member of the Standing Committee on Natural Resources. Mr. Bains is currently a member of the Canada-US and the Canada-India Friendship Groups.
Navdeep brings to Ottawa a strong social conscience and a commitment to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He is also dedicated to fixing health care; to building a sustainable child care system; to increased funding and services for seniors; and to helping small and medium sized businesses. Navdeep is involved in many community activities including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Sunshine Walk for Dreams and the Guru Gobind Singh Children’s Foundation.
CURRICULUM VITAE
Navdeep was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1977. He completed his undergraduate degree at York University where he obtained his Bachelor of Administrative Studies. Following that, Mr. Bains went on to complete his Masters in Business Administration from the University of Windsor and obtained the designation of a Certified Management Accountant. Prior to entering political life, Mr. Bains worked in Accounting and Financial Analysis. His most recent appointment was at the Ford Motor Company where he worked as a Financial Analyst.
Mr. Bains currently lives in Mississauga with his wife Brahamjot and their daughter Nanki.
