MP Bains Hosts Youth Mental Health Roundtable
Posted on 19 July 2010
MISSISSAUGA- Yesterday Liberal Member of Parliament, the Hon. Navdeep Bains hosted a roundtable on youth mental health issues for Peel Region.
"This event was an eye opener for me," said Mr. Bains. "Learning of the enormous challenges facing our mental health providers is an important first step in improving our collective response."
The event, held at the Monte Carlo Hotel, brought together experts and front line personal to discuss how best to deal with issues facing youth as well as stigma in diverse communities.
"Sadly, mental health does not get the same level of attention as other health issues in our society, particularly when it comes to youth" said Mr. Bains. "But with 1 in 5 Canadians suffering from mental disease in their lifetime, it is a widespread problem."
"By working to address youth mental health issues we are attacking the problem before it can have a lasting impact."
The event's two discussions were moderated by Laune Zon, CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association Ontario, and Gordon Floyd, CEO of the Children's Mental Health Ontario. The roundtable was attended by over 20 mental health professionals representing 15 different organizations in Peel Region.
"This was an important learning experience, not only for me, but also for the participants," said Mr. Bains. "I will be taking what I’ve learned and looking at what I can do in Ottawa to tackle these issues”.
